Breast Reconstruction is performed to restore the appearance of one or both breasts after mastectomy, lumpectomy or other trauma or congenital deformities. Breast reconstruction is performed using a few different methods depending on the needs of each patient. Typically breast reconstruction is done using either an implant reconstruction or a flap reconstruction. The implant reconstruction uses saline or silicone breast implants to recreate the breasts, while a flap reconstruction using the patient’s own tissue taken from another part of their body to recreate the breast mount.

Breast reconstruction can be performed sometimes at the same time as a mastectomy or later on. Ideal candidates for a breast reconstruction should not have other illnesses that would inhibit their bodies ability to heal from the procedure, and they should have realistic expectations for the procedure and potential results.
