Breast Lift or Breast Augmentation?

A breast lift elevates and reshapes the breasts, giving them a higher position and youthful appearance. Breast augmentation, on the other hand, creates volume and projection, and in some cases, breast implants alone can also improve a minimal degree of sagging.

Dr. Strock uses his experience and expertise to recommend the best surgical approach for each case. Whether your breasts have lost volume after pregnancy or weight loss or just have a low position, you may work with him to decide to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation.

This combination is known as a breast lift with implants or a breast augmentation with lift. It is ideal for cases when a patient desires more volume or needs more volume to improve the appearance and shape of the breast. During this combination procedure, breast implants are added, and excess tissue is removed. A breast lift without implants, however, is still a very effective procedure that creates very natural results and is the ideal choice for many patients.

Benefits of Breast Lift

A breast lift can offer a wide range of benefits. It can reshape your breasts to restore youthful contour, improve symmetry, and create a firmer, lifted appearance. If you have drooping breasts due to pregnancy or weight loss, breast reshaping can significantly enhance your breasts’ overall shape and profile.

Breast Lift Recovery Timeline

Days 1-3: Initial rest

You’ll wear a surgical bra and may have drainage tubes. Discomfort is manageable with prescribed medication. Most patients rest at home and avoid lifting anything heavy.

Week 1: Light activity

Swelling and bruising peak around day 3, then begin to fade. You can shower once Dr. Strock approves. Many patients return to desk work after 7-10 days.

Weeks 2-4: Gradual return

Swelling continues to decrease. You can resume walking and light stretching. Avoid raising your arms overhead or doing strenuous upper-body movements.

Months 3-6: Full results

Incision lines soften and fade. Your breasts settle into their lifted position. You can return to all normal activities, including exercise and sleeping on your stomach.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Mastopexy?

A breast lift may be right for you if you notice sagging or loss of firmness, often after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes.

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Notice your breasts sit lower or lack upper fullness
  • See nipples pointing downward or below the breast crease
  • Have noticeable breast asymmetry
  • Pass the “pencil test”
  • Maintain a stable weight
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit
  • Have realistic expectations

If you plan future pregnancies, you may want to wait. Breastfeeding after a lift is often possible and can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Strock.

“I have been impressed by Dr. Strock, as well as his office staff.”

“I initially went to Dr. Strock 15 years ago to have implants placed and had a wonderful experience, was very happy with the results, and never had an issue; however I came to a point in my life where I no longer wanted implants. After my first experience with Dr. Strock and his staff, he was my obvious first choice to do the second procedure. I consulted with him and decided that I not only wanted the implants removed but also wanted a breast lift. I am now 7 months post-op and am thrilled with the results…much better than I’d anticipated!!! I highly recommend Dr. Strock…he and his staff have been fantastic through every step of my journey.”

Breast Lift Procedure

For patients who need a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, Dr. Strock can enhance breast shape using incisions that alter the skin envelope and elevate the nipple to a position that’s more aesthetically pleasing about the base of the breast. A patient’s aesthetic goals can often be accomplished using surgical approaches that limit the incisions and scarring compared to traditional mastopexy techniques. These approaches include:

Periareolar (Donut) Lift

Dr. Strock makes the incisions around the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). It can be an excellent option for patients with mildly low breast positions. It is usually combined with implants.

Vertical (Lollipop) Lift

In addition to the incision made around the areola, a second incision extends vertically down from the areola to the base of the breast. This is sometimes referred to as a “lollipop” lift, adds a powerful lift effect, and is appropriate for patients with low breast tissue and nipple position.

Traditional (Anchor) Lift

For breasts with very low breast tissue and nipple position, a horizontal incision made in the crease of the breast is added to the incisions described above. The shape of the incisions resembles an anchor, which is why this is often referred to as an “anchor lift.” This incision pattern allows for the greatest degree of tightening, lifting, and reshaping.

Breast Lift FAQs

In most cases, a breast lift preserves the ability to breastfeed as the milk ducts and glands remain intact. However, discussing any concerns with our trusted surgeon, Dr. Strock, is best during the consultation.
Scars are a natural part of any surgery but usually fade significantly over time with proper care. Dr. Strock uses techniques designed to minimize and conceal scars effectively.
Results from a breast lift can last many years, depending on factors like aging, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy. Maintaining a stable weight can help prolong the effects.
