What Is BOTOX?

As one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world, it has become a household word. Many people, however, aren’t sure exactly what it is, how it works, and which conditions it can treat.

BOTOX Cosmetic is an Allergan product that is derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. In its genetic form, it is called botulinum toxin type A, or onabotulinumtoxinA.

There are several reasons why facial wrinkles develop. Forehead wrinkles and the “worry lines” between the eyes are “dynamic wrinkles,” caused by the repeated contractions of tiny muscles. BOTOX minimizes these wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles.

BOTOX is also used for medical purposes such as addressing hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in the armpits and other areas) and migraine headaches.

When administered with skill and precision by a highly trained physician such as Dr. Strock, the result is a relaxed, rested appearance that can takes years off of the appearance of the face.

Good Candidates for BOTOX

Most patients considering BOTOX injections are concerned about early signs of aging such as horizontal forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, and vertical lines above the bridge of the nose (often called “worry lines” or “frown lines”), bunny lines, lipstick lines around the lips, chin wrinkles, and vertical neckbands. They may also require jaw and jawline contouring.

The best BOTOX candidates have realistic expectations and have a good idea of what the results may look like. Viewing BOTOX before and after photos helps patients understand the type of results the treatment can achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do BOTOX treatments hurt?
How someone tolerates discomfort is highly personal, but the vast majority of BOTOX patients report minimal discomfort during BOTOX treatments. The procedure typically lasts only about 10 minutes, and we typically numb the area with a cold compress first. The needles used for BOTOX injections are very small, and most people describe the injection as comparable to a little pinch. Post-injection redness and tenderness are common, but temporary.
  • Is there downtime required?
After a BOTOX treatment, there is no downtime or recovery time required. Instead, patients can immediately return to their everyday activities, including work. This makes the treatment very convenient.
  • Are the results immediate?
Patients shouldn’t expect to see results right away. Although response times vary from patient to patient, BOTOX usually begins to reduce frown lines and wrinkles within 3 to 5 days. In some cases it can take up to a week. The final results may take 2 weeks to fully emerge.
  • How long do the results last?
Patients may see noticeable results for as long as 3 to 4 months, and regularly scheduled injections help keep lines at bay. Studies suggest results may last longer with repeated treatments.
  • When is a filler a better option than BOTOX?
Dr. Strock recommends the best treatment option during an initial consultation. Dermal fillers fill in wrinkles and restore volume to areas of the face that have lost it, such as the cheeks, under-eye area, and around the mouth. BOTOX relaxes certain muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. When strategically combined, the results can be dramatic.
  • How much does BOTOX cost?
The price of a BOTOX injection varies from practice to practice. Generally, BOTOX cost is determined by factors like the number of units used. To aid in payment, we offer financing through CareCredit.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

The cost of a Botox will depend on several factors. The price can be affected by body type, type of technique performed, surgical complications, and even allergies. Find out more by scheduling a consultation.
