Breast enhancement refers to a group of procedures that improves the appearance of your breasts. Breast enlargement is performed by placement of breast implants to increase breast volume and enhance shape. Breast lift is performed in selected patients to regain a youthful breast shape by reconfiguring the skin envelope of the breast and repositioning the nipple to a more aesthetic location. Breast enlargement and lift are sometimes performed as combined procedures, depending upon the preoperative situation and the postoperative goals.
Breast reduction is performed in patients who have breasts that are disproportionately large. These patients usually have associated upper neck, back, and shoulder pain in some combination and may have activity limitations, rashes, and other functional difficulties. Breast reduction surgery is aimed at the treatment of these symptoms with an enhancement of appearance by removal of skin and breast tissue. Breast reduction surgery is often covered by medical insurance.
Breast implant replacement or other secondary procedures are sometimes needed for patients who experience implant rupture, increased firmness (capsular contracture), or severe gravitational effects which change the position of a breast implant relative to the overlying breast tissue. Secondary procedures may also be needed if the aesthetic goals for breast size and shape change over time.
Breast enhancement is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Breast reduction patients are usually observed in the operative facility or hospital overnight following the procedure. Recovery usually includes a short period of activity restriction that allows for an early return to work and most normal activities.
